The Social Contract Theory: Hobbes, Locke & Rousseau

Social contracts are trying to explain why individuals agree to form an organized government. People are willing to abandon previously enjoyed freedom in a natural state in which the government does not intervene in their pursuit and are believed to respond to individual attempts to protect the behavior that is most appropriate for their interests. In this case, moral and political obligations rely on contracts or agreements among people to form the society where they live. As philosophers advocating social contract theory think that individuals exist before the government, the government concretely meets and satisfies social contract theory.

In this article, I will briefly introduce the social contract theory by Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau. I will explain what social contract theory is and why. Then according to Hobbes, Locke and Rousseau's paper pointed out the state of nature. It also proposed differences in opinion among these natural state law scholars on social contracts and finally suggested a critical understanding of social contract theory given by Hobbes, Locke and Rousseau.
