The city is in the poor Sahara desert, but it is a powerful house of art, architecture and literature. Timbuktu crosses the Sahara trade route between the Taoudenni salt mine deep in the Sahara desert and the South Sahara gold mine. Crafts and textile industry, including dozens of skilled tailors, are also growing fast in this city.
