The Similarities between Romanticism and Modernism

Many people may argue that the Modernist movement is a new and unique movement in British literature. The purpose of this paper is to judge whether modernist literary movement is completely unique. The similarity found in works by modernist writers and poets such as Joseph Conrad and Hilda Doltel (H. D.) is compared with romantic themes and writers such as William Wordsworth. What is discovered is that modernism is not a completely unique exercise but a combination of elements of past literary movements.

Modernism of romanticism and modernism can be said to be a response to the former paradigm, romanticism. Romanticism in art and literature began in the early 19th century as a response to the then war and belief system. Meanwhile, the ethical requirements related to religious images were related to state struggle for independence. The image of art and literature plant these ideals. There is a big difference between transcendence and romanticism, especially their perception of the purpose of life and their concepts about God and the spirit of man.
