This optimistic atmosphere was captured by Thomas Low Nichols in a study of living in New England in the 1930 's. Nickels was born in New Hampshire in 1815 and then grew up as a journalist and a prolific writer. His work promotes healthy food, free love, spiritualism and other new ideas. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Nichols and his wife left America and lived in England as a protest. So, he published a number of works, including his youth memoir in New England.
