The Search for My Heritage

Unlike many other children at the age of 7, personal statements began to face the theme of diversity. Since I was a child I knew that children might be cruel. It is difficult to remember how many days I prayed. I woke up with golden blonde hair and bright blue eyes. I am too young to understand my deeply rooted family history and why I differ from many other children in my elementary school. A few years later, when I was in seventh grade, I was still struggling with my appearance.

As I grow, I can talk about my tradition anytime and I am proud of my ancestors. If people around me knew my Pakistani tradition, I soon began listening to the lunch line and "Paki" in the corridor of my school. Then someone said to me that I was not mixed, sometimes I call myself "Pach". "You are not brown enough to blend races." "Only your grandfather can not mix races" or "I think you are a white man." I am still dealing with these arrogant statements at the age of 33. It is strange that you were told what you are, that you are not.

For the Jews, I did not recognize my heritage. This is strange because I do not even know my "heritage". We celebrate Christmas with 2 families. It seems that it was a refusal of the entire religion that I refused to eat fish as food. I think the Passover Festival is boring, or my love for Mazzo ball soup is invalid. But even though a devout Jew would grow up, I was in a hurry shocking anti-Semitism. Maybe this is what I hide. No one knows that I am a Jew. They said that I would not see.
