The Screwtape Letters, by C.S. Lewis

Patients feel a sensual pleasure of desire during a boring period (primarily sexual life or excessive diet), and believe that his beliefs are only "phases" of his life. When he sins, he also wants his patient to feel unsatisfied undercurrent rather than shame.
