The Scaffold as a Place of Humility and Remorse, Unity and Freedom in "The Scarlet Letter"

In 'red letter', Hawthorne depicted the footing as a place of humility and regret, as a place of unity and freedom. The scaffolding in 'Boston's oldest church house' is the criminal court (51). With this footing, Hester fulfilled part of the punishment for the Puritan community. And they often came to see the beliefs of criminals. The adultery was publicly humiliated with a foothold, but Hester got together with her daughter and lover together and reached the footprints of the sacred place.

But the worst part of Hester's punishment is not standing on the scaffold; this is a sentence that puts "red" on her chest so that everyone can see. As Hester was raped by pastor Din Mesdale, he was sentenced to have wore a red letter to attack / humiliation her. Because Hawthorn was afraid of female sexual activity not shown, he chose adolescence of women and a red letter. When Hester arrives at the scaffold, the crowd will sneak in 'red' as they know that this is the crime of adultery committed by Hester. Hester wears dull gray clothes just like any other woman in society, but she is always in the crowd because of her vibrant red letters. One example of these times is that Hester decided to take a "red letter" and put it back.

These symbols are intertwined because their purpose is related to the punishment and sin of Hester Prinine. In "Red Letter" of Nathaniel Hawthornes, the scaffold is a place of humiliation and reconciliation. At the beginning, middle and end of the novel, three scaffoldings appeared. The four main characters of the novel and the red letter "A" will appear in all the scaffolding scenes. The scene maintains an outline of the story and emphasizes the most important theme of the novel. For practical purposes, the scaffolding is inserted into the story, but as the novel progresses, it will present and characterize various other implications.

The first scaffolding scene of The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne was held at the beginning of the novel. This is noon in June, 1642. Many Puritans gathered around Boston's scaffolding. They witnessed a public punishment by Hester Prine who committed adultery. Hester came out of prison and hugged her 3 month old child in her clothes with a red letter A. The scaffold was used only to explain offenders who violated Puritan law. It represents sin itself. When Hester and her daughter, the product of her and her lover 's sin come together, she recognizes and accepts her own shame, so her pride gradually disappears. Hester looked at a cruel gaze in the crowd and saw an elderly doctor who was deformed in the suburbs of the crowd. She soon realized that the man was her husband who had been away for many years and is her husband who had never heard it more than two years ago.
