The Salem Scare

On that day hanging on Gentley Hill, many people saw that their friends and family were executed for crimes that were not committed. Arthur Miller explains this morbid incident with The Crucible. The war between the United States and Russia was very close when Miller wrote the script Many people believed communists were infiltrating the government. Joseph McCarthy is a person who accuses me of becoming a "red man". Arthur Miller is one of the victims of McCarthy's word attack.

The history of the United States is full of situations where some people are accused of doing something and someone is a scapegoat. Two notable examples are Salem Witch Trials and Red Scare. Salem witch trial at 1692 began a seizure that occurred in girls' group and a very crazy time appeared. Because they think that it is the work of the devil, they are scared of everyone. Soon these girls were forced to condemn some of their friends as witches. Defendants are often punished or killed. This is very similar to the red panic of the 1950s. The red panic is the era in American history, and many Americans are concerned about Soviet communism. Like witch trials, people are forced to tell the government whether they know someone who might be a communist. If people do not say that, then they will be suspected of hiding information. When someone is condemned to be a communist, they are forced to appoint three other communists or spend time in prison.

During these infamous American historical times, critics expressed strong opposition to Salem Witch trials and red panic. During Salem Witch's trial, critic Thomas Braitor observed that the judges were absolutely incorrect and pointed out that they sometimes made mistakes within the government (see Resources). Senator Joseph McCarthy evoked criticism from Senators Margaret Chase Smith before the US Senate voted officially condemning him on 2 December 1954. The red panic of the 1950s caused many crazy assertions of publicity hearings.
