GMO has been in use only for the past 20 years, but they make up the majority of the US food supply. The role of EFSA is to independently evaluate risk managers and to provide scientific advice on possible risks to human and animal health and the environment from genetically modified organisms (GMO). In Europe, the role of risk managers such as the European Commission and Member States is to decide whether GMOs or derivatives can enter the EU market. At the request of the European Commission, EFSA has developed comprehensive guidelines for risk assessment of food and feed of genetically modified animals, including animal health and welfare and environmental safety assessment. The authorities also developed guidance documents on environmental risk assessment (ERA) for genetically modified animals, including genetically modified fish, insects, mammals and birds.

Foods derived from genetically modified organisms are called genetically modified foods or genetically modified foods. Basically, it is any genetically engineered plant or animal.
