The Return of the Prodigal Son

The return of the prodigal son is one of the last works of famous Dutch painter and is believed to have been completed just before his death. This life-sized picture represents the Bible story at the moment that the prodigal son regret the sin when he returned to his father and begs for forgiveness. There is no agreement on who this other person is in this picture, the most obvious person is a ruthless brother. According to some critics, the young man beside the door is behind, but according to others, the right person is standing. This picture is one of the highlights of the Western European Museum Collection of the Hermitage Museum.

Another homage to this metaphor is incorporating the return to Rembrandt's prodigal son in the 1992 book by Dutch theologian Henry Nuven, "Return of Prodigal Son: Returning Story."
