Impact of Online Alternative Media on Political Participation Although news media and alternative media show different characteristics, the distinction between them becomes blurred (Kenix, 2011). Traditional news organizations follow objective and structured principles in reporting news, as previous studies have shown. It makes it easy for citizens to obtain specific information about political participation (Hoffman & Thomson, 2009). By contrast, in a close relationship with political activists, alternative media is not so journalistic and more ideological-oriented (Atton & Hamilton, 2008). This feature suggests that alternate media stimulate strong emotions and may be effective in encouraging street protests. However, many existing alternative media studies have focused on content and production (Atton, 2007) and have not fully utilized its effects.
