Gerrard Manley Hopkins' poem "Carrion Comfort" was written after his appointment as a pastor of the Jesuits and his transformation from the high church Anglicans. In his youth trial, Manley Hopkins believed that practicing poetry hindered his relationship with God, which led him to nearly completely abdicate his poem for seven years. "No, I will not, lose comfort, despair, please do not slap you", the lecturer tried to convince him that he would find the strength to prevent his despair. By capitalizing the word "hopeless", the speaker makes him avatar and instructs his request through the next few lines. He compared despair with "carrion". Some are sneaky and rotten. Therefore he disregarded "Feast" as desperation for eating rotten meat. In addition to "carrion", the lecturer compared his despair with "comfort". This comparison contrasts with his two hopeless views that speakers are struggling. "Rust meat" shows that despair of the speaker disgusts him like a stinky flesh. In contrast, he saw the ultimate comfort of death if he allowed his despair to manifest. Furthermore, the anaphora used in the first and second lines of the poem, and the position of the word "no" indicate the despair and urgency of the request of the speaker. Hopkins does not start with the word "hopeless", but regards the despair of speakers as the most important subject, but I am starting with the word "no". This structural decision highlights the speaker 's determination to escape despair. Even though he overcomes emphasizing the word "no" as the first word now, it reveals the most important aspect of the first word.
