The Relationship Between Interpersonal Communication and Marital Satisfaction

In his book, John Gottman points out that "a permanent marriage is caused by the ability of a spouse to solve an inevitable confrontation in any relationship" (p. 28). In his argument, John is exploring relations between interpersonal communication and marital satisfaction. By doing so, he proposed two hypotheses aimed at solving relationship problems. The first assumption is that there is a personal information system between her husband and his wife, which enhances communication in a healthy marriage.

According to the linear model of marriage relationship, there is a positive correlation between marriage disclosure and spouse's satisfaction. Marriage is characterized by such factors as intimacy, trust and concern. Since the disclosure of marriage has a positive influence on these factors, the presence of these elements in the marriage relationship systematically improves marriage satisfaction. Therefore, this model shows that the higher the level of marriage disclosure, the higher the degree of marriage satisfaction, and vice versa.

Marriage satisfaction is everyone wants to find equations that are goals all couple desire to achieve naturally. Since the satisfaction of the spouse is clearly related directly to the stability of the spouse, the higher the satisfaction of marriage, the more stable the relationship is, the more positive it is. This stability is achieved through efforts and communication between partners and mutual understanding of their roles in the relationship.
