Fake news has become the most important topic of the public discussion especially for elite people. A recent survey has investigated the epidemic of fake news in the 2016 election cycle and the possible impact it may have on election results. This scholarship does not yet consider how elite discourses on false news will affect perception of individuals' real news. Through experiments, this study explores the impact of elite discourse on false news about mass media ratings. The results show that access to elite discourse on false news leads to a decline in the level of trust in the media and inaccurate perception of real news. Therefore, frequent discussions about erroneous news may affect whether individuals trust news media and criteria for evaluating news media. This type of discourse can also encourage the spread of false information, especially in the context of elite discussing false news without background or caution.
