The Power of Purple during Semana Santa

For centuries, purple played an important role in Christianity during Holy Week around Easter. Purple, red, black, white, gold has a symbolic meaning as a royal family color and suffering. In the early days, considering the cost and difficulty of creating purple, its significance is not a coincidence. In addition, colors often symbolize the sufferings of Jesus Christ when crucified.

When I visited Guatemala a week before Semana Santa ("Holy Week"), I was able to witness the power of purple fortunately.

Antigua's Semana Santa is considered to be the most important cultural and religious activity in Guatemala and during this Holy Week there is no more important city than Antigua. Antigua is probably the largest and most traditional and most famous Semana Santas in the world. Meanwhile, thousands of tourists flocked to Antigua, witnessed magnificent religious parades, Alfomula ("Carpet"), wonderful floats and rallies. This is experience of life, it is said that you will never forget an experience

Between Semana Santa, the importance of purple can be found in town. It is represented vividly in colorful purple Semana Santa Claus banner adorned with city windows, buildings, fences. It can be seen in colorful alpha phones drawn on the street. It can be seen in a deep purple dress worn by a parade. And ironically, we can see hundreds of Jacaranda trees blooming throughout the city. If this is not a coincidence, I do not know what it means.

This is a part of my favorite moment in the movie. It represents the purple power of Antigua 's world - renowned Semana Santa.
