The Patterson Homestead

Frederick Douglas Patterson, an African-American educational leader, was born in Washington, DC on October 10, 1901. Paterson, the youngest of the five children, was named after the abolishist Frederick Douglas. Patterson's parents died of tuberculosis in their childhood and sent to live with their friends at home when they were two years old. When Patterson was seven years old, her older sister Bessie became a legal guardian. As he grew up, Patterson learned at Sam Houston University in Texas and elementary and high school courses at Prairie View University. After graduating from high school, Patterson received a doctorate in veterinary medicine from Iowa State University in 1927. He stayed in Iowa until 1927 and acquired a master's degree in science. Patterson acquired another doctorate from Cornell University in 1932.

Patterson is a son of a tough man who grew up in Newburgh, New York and got over the difficult childhood. Patterson's father was raised by a single mother in the local slums town, received a scholarship from Hamilton College, dreamed of being a writer or diplomat, but eventually sold the insurance.
