The Nature and Purpose of Games: Toward Social Justice

This is the first post based on my speech at the Boston Independence Games in 2014. This presentation is targeted to audiences who are standing and producing intense questions and comments. We will extend this topic a bit here to provide more background of academic sociology behind these ideas and further develop the game field after the conversation.

All I would like to say is that all of these are generally understood by game developers and are generally accepted by gamers ... but they are not. Our group (and some shiny exceptions) continues to fail to realize our possibilities as a professional player. If this sounds a little exciting, that's it. Racism. Sex discrimination class privileges These are some important words and we heard a lot in the game development industry in 2014. The pressure surrounding them seems to disappear recently. Regardless of our game or the world, at the level of discrimination, violence or rights by the games and gaming communities or gender under development there is little or no positive impact, but it is destructive. "Social justice warriors", I think they despised each other from their moral point of view, the real toxic elements were inspired by opponents ... and the most benevolent gamers and game developers just Their rolling eyes are keeping their heads down and keep making games the same way as before.

... So I took this speech and converted it to a post and tried to explain why this is important to everyone who does not see himself.

Many board games popular in history have born for social purposes or conveyed moral value. For example, monopoly is a social justice game aimed at raising consciousness about affordable rent, land tax, and tenant's right. Slides and ladders were developed in early games, drawing moral lessons of life with bad habits and virtues. Professors Mike Horn and Reed Stevens of SESP bring new changes to this traditional board game tradition by creating innovative games that create social change. They use their own 21st century approach not only to take advantage of new technologies but also to rely on established board game blueprints.

This is part of a series of articles that reveals general terms relating to social justice, its purpose, and misuse. This series aims to explain the usefulness and effectiveness of the core concept of social justice and at the same time points out the danger of applying these concepts excessively or extensively. This article by Patheos shows the uncompromising nature of social justice. It is not important that the author of this work is a Christian. Social justice forces you to give it back to you first.
