Francis Scott Key is a talented amateur poet. The next morning after the bombing, looking at the American flag flying over Fort McHenry, he scrawled out the first section of his song behind the letter. Returning to Baltimore, he completed four poems (PDF) and copied them on a piece of paper. A local printer announced this new song. Shortly thereafter, two newspapers in Baltimore released the press, and as of the middle of October at least 17 papers were published in each city on the east coast.
