The use of the number of units generated as the sole independent variable to monitor the progress of the task has raised important questions about the validity of the learning model. The traditional learning curve originally developed for aircraft manufacturing is not practical for many other engineering processes as it means that all manufactured units are of acceptable quality. In search of relevance between learning curve tool and quality control, many authors try to quantify learning through quality performance of production process, overcoming these restrictions.
