The Life of Virginia Henderson

Virginia Henderson was born in Kansas City, Missouri. Named after the State of Virginia, she moved there at the age of four. She went to Bellevue, a preparatory school owned by her grandfather. After that I continued my studies at the Army Nursing College in Washington, DC, and I took classes at Teachers University which I graduated in 1921. Henderson first took care of settlements at Henry Street in New York. Then in 1924 she began teaching at Norfolk Protestant Hospital in Virginia. So she was the first teacher of the nursing school.

Virginia Avernal Henderson was born in Kansas City, Missouri on November 30, 1897. She is the fifth of the eight children born by Daniel B and Lucy Minor Henderson (McBride, 1996). She was named after Virginia where her mother came from, and later she was educated at a male school operated by her grandfather (Thomas). Henderson continued his studies at the American Army Nursing School in Washington, DC and graduated in 1921. She studied at Columbia University Teachers College and got both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree in 1932 and 1934 respectively. She taught there from 1934 to 1948 and worked at Yale Nursing College in 1953 (McBride, 1996).

As Jezierski (1997) stated, Henderson's theory is very important for nursing.
