According to the New York Times, due to the legal assignment of urban assets to non-profit organizations, Memphis was able to circumvent the state law prohibiting "dismantling, relocating, or renaming public monuments of public property." Mayor of Memphis acknowledged that the municipality was asked to reevaluate the presence of the monument of the Southern Alliance due to violent protests in Charlottesville.
