The Joy of Going to the Library

A few months ago when I got into this new position I reached an agreement with myself and went to the library at least once a week. In other words, it takes time to walk about buildings on campus and load tangible books. I was fortunate to be able to digitally access the latest journal article in the previous position, but I missed the narrow corridor caused by walking on the bookshelf. It is a good thing to browse textbooks, special issue, memoirs and other academic titles. When you open old books, they will have a wonderful scent.

I really hope to have access to my office digital journal with just a few clicks. The number of journals related to my research field and the total number of articles seems to be increasing every year, so the ability to keep in sync with my computer through RSS feed and online access to PDF is important. But when I explore the direction of some new research (at least for me), I will see basic papers 30 or 40 years ago. Many of them are special issues published as books. Many of these books are not digitized, so they will not be digitized. Therefore, we need to go to the library. Interestingly, the research which was very common now seems to be a special occasion.

One of the many arguments for supporting old-fashioned good libraries - physical library, hard copy, stack diversity - is an immense element for coincidence discovery.

It is also nice to add online features like Amazon to magazine articles and databases, but it is different from meeting interesting things just because of wiping out the shelves. It pulled your attention. I do not know if the digital library can reproduce this, but it is not a problem. I like to leave a small cave and have a reason to take a walk in the library on campus. Perhaps today I will find something interesting.

One of the joy of my life is the moment when I finished reading a book. This is an exciting combination to enjoy the joy of a good story (or fun idea) and to mix the infinite possibilities of the next step! As a writer (who wants to publish witty novels), I think that "book" is as good as what at the beginning.
