Even the Greeks recognized the influence of Homer and as long as they did not read his work they did not think they were educated. Whether Homer is truly a historical figure is controversial. Some scholars believe that Iliad and Odyssey are works of many writers, not a single writer. No matter who wrote, Iliad and Odyssey had a great impact on literature. In fact, even Shakespeare is his Iliad drama play.
