The importance of professional values from clinical nurses’ perspective in hospitals of a medical university in Iran

Today, nurses must have knowledge and awareness about occupational values ​​as a standard for providing safe and high quality ethical care. Nurse awareness of expert values ​​affects decision making and patient care. Therefore, this research aims to study the importance of professional values ​​from the viewpoint of clinical nurse.

The current cross-sectional study was held in four educational hospitals in Kerman Medical College in Iran in 2016. Data was collected by Weis and Schank's Persian Care Professional Value Scale (NPVS-R). Sampling was done using stratified random sampling, and 250 clinical nurses participated in the study.

The results showed that the total professional value of the nurse was higher. (102.57 ± 11.94). From the perspective of a nurse, "confidentiality of patients" and "protection of patient's privacy" are more important, but "to recognize the role of expert associations in the formation of health policy" and "participate in nursing research / Or implementation of research results suitable for practice is not so important. A statistically significant relationship was observed between the NPVS-R mean score and nurse age, occupational experience and participation in vocational ethics training (P <0.05).

Although the overall score related to recognition of professional values ​​by clinical nurses is high, the significance of specific values ​​is low. Designing educational programs is essential for new nurse's perceptions and understanding of the comprehensive importance of professional values ​​resulting from new ethical issues. In addition, hybrid approach studies are recommended to design tools to evaluate the use of values ​​in nursing practice.
