The Human Right Violation that is Child Marriage

Child marriage in Niger is more frequent among uneducated girls. In 2006, women between the ages of 20 and 24 and women in rural areas doubled the likelihood of marrying by the age of 18 in women in urban areas. The literacy rate of the country is 28.7%, but compared with the literacy rate of the American women (99%), the proportion of women who can be expelled due to possible marriage of the economy and children is only 15.1%. In the United States, the average life expectancy of women is 81.94 years, but the average life span of women is much lower in Niger (55.97 years).

According to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN), child marriage refers to marriage under the age of 18 (UN 2000). Marriage before the age of 18 is the fundamental cause of human rights violations. Excessive child marriage affects girls who are more likely to marry as children than children (Mathur et al. 2003; UNICEF 2005; Save the Children 2004). According to the latest international estimate, more than 60 million women aged 20-24 years of age are married before the age of 18 (UNICEF, 2007).

Child marriage is an infringement of human rights, risking the development of girls, often leading to early pregnancy and social isolation. Young married girls face heavy domestic responsibilities, limit decision making, and reduce their choices of life. This publication uses population statistics and household survey data to estimate the prevalence of child marriage and to identify and understand factors related to living together with child's marriage. The identified statistical link helps planners promote postponement of marriage and use campaigns and action change campaigns to prevent children from marrying.

In 2013, the UN Human Rights Council adopted the first resolution on children, early and compulsory marriages, but this resolution allows children, including human rights violations, early and forced marriages.
