Cisneros is best known for her young adult essay collection "Mango Street House" (1984), designed based on her experiences grew up in the Latin American working class community in Chicago. Cisneros won the American Book Award and the Columbus Foundation's previous book award in 1985. Both books are Mango Street's home, best seller, and it is the center of the reading list of elementary schools, high schools and universities. Through a talk of Esperanza, a twelve year old Tikana girl, The House narrator on Mango street, Cisneros explores Tikana's identity in a dual cultural context of the Latin American community.
