It is not always considered formal science, but chemistry has run through the history of mankind. People have fermented food and drink for centuries. Archeologists have found pottery at their excavation site and bowls and glaze used to protect them are also derived from chemistry knowledge. As you can see, chemistry exists whether you define it or not. Because understanding of chemistry is very important in many other scientific disciplines, there are several different categories of chemistry. In fact, chemistry is often studied so that scientists can better understand their field.
