Although Jodders traveled the west in hopes of creating a resurrected life, the American dreams avoided them, but proved that their travels to California were sad and disappointing. They found some relief at the camp and eventually got work, but their dream life was able to disappear further. The similarity between John Steinbeck's lifetime and the story he carved is obvious.
