The Gordon Parks Art Patron Prize will recognize people who appreciate art. Winners will receive special appreciation for the support and promotion of artistic creativity in visual art, film, literature or performing arts.

Parks has won numerous awards including the National Art Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation Scholarship, the Whiting Writer Award, the New American Kennedy Center Foundation Award, and the PEN-Laura Pels Excellence Award. In addition to the aforementioned Obi Prize and Pulitzer Prize drama, Parks also received the Guggenheim Scholarship and the renowned MacArthur Foundation scholarship, also known as "Genius Scholarship."

In 2010, Annette Gordon - Reed was awarded the MacArthur scholarship for his work in the colony and early American history, race and slavery. The Foundation stated that her continued investigation of the iconic American president's life dramatically changed the Jefferson scholarship process.
