Imagine the color, places without choice, places where personality and freedom are exchanged for identity and security. Louis Laurie made such a place in the novel "Giving". This place, or rather the community is considered to be the future, and everyone should be a utopia that follows the rules. Citizens have nothing to do with their past or what they give up. Only two people can remember. One is a provider and the other is a memory recipient. These two are the protagonists of this story. The donor is an old man and elders rely on him when they encounter problems. He listened to their proposal, then made decisions based on their past lessons and told them what they should do. He also left his memory to the recipient of the memory, he is a 12 year old boy Jonas. When Jonas receives memories, he will understand bad things such as war, hatred, and pain. He also learned beautiful things like color and love. When he got memory, his eyes were opened by what he called "a complete" society.

The story begins with Jonas being nervous about his twelfth ritual. At this ceremony, he was assigned his lifetime work, a memory receiver. When he entered the first day of training, the donor gave him the memory of snow and sunburn pain. Jonas got many other memories from here, some are awful, and some are good. Jonas like to accept almost memories until he notices that liberation means killing by a truly deadly injection. He also learned that his father was telling a lie. When Jonas received his memories, he also saw hypocrisy in his community. He understands how Elder manages everything by making rules and decisions for everyone. No one is allowed to choose and everyone must obey the rules. No love
