Education of functional education is a side of socialization including acquiring knowledge and acquiring skills. It shapes our beliefs and moral values ​​through formal dissemination of the system. Education is considered an integral part of society as education provides a useful contribution to maintain and adapt society and its value. Prior to the 1960s, education was taught through a system called "three way" system. This includes all children over the age of 11 who divide their children into a capability flow and are tested to determine their individual ability to assign them where they believe.

Historically, education in the United States has political and economic needs, which determines the function of education. Today sociologists and educators discuss the function of education. Three major theories of functionalism theory, conflict theory, and symbolic interaction theory represent their views. Functionalism theory focuses on how universal education meets social needs. Functionalists first think education as their obvious role as follows: to communicate basic knowledge and skills to the next generation. Durkheim (the founder of functionalism theory) has identified the potential role of education as a way of socializing people into the mainstream of society. What he calls "moral education" forms a more cohesive social structure that reflects historical concerns of "Americanized" immigrants by putting together people from different backgrounds.

Functionalists believe that education is one of the most important social systems in society. They believe that education has two functions: a performance (or primary) function that is the expected visible function of education and a potential (or secondary) function that is a hidden, unintended function )function. Education has several distinctive features. One is socialization. Starting from preschool and kindergarten, students are taught to practice various social roles. French sociologist Emil Dülkem (1858-1917) who established discipline of sociology said school "Social system to educate children about how to prepare for the economic role of adults by making friends with others" (Durkheim 1898). Indeed, the school seems to take full responsibility for this responsibility.

The obvious function of the school is what people think is the obvious purpose of school and education. The display function of education is intentional and is a function that is considered by most people. For example, in elementary school, parents want to learn new information and methods of "mating" with other children and to begin to understand how society functions. Therefore, in addition to teaching subject knowledge, the two most important functions of the school are socialization and the spread of cultural norms and values.
