Donald Francis Stow's music format was published in 1944, but it remains the best resource for music format. These articles were written for Britannica Encyclopedia in 1906, were substantially revised in 1929, collected after the death of Tovey, and published in 1944 as a music article for the Britannica Encyclopedia. Today, they are very valuable for every classical music enthusiast.

How is such an old article still the best resource for music? Tovey combines excellent writing skills with elusion and analytical skills. Although he knows the whole classical repertoire, he is also a difficult subject of experts such as Gregorian chant, fugue, pastoral opera. Most importantly, Tovey is focused not on dry academic form but on music purpose and communication. As a result, it continues to influence music lovers' works today as well.

The articles are arranged in alphabetical order. The first article on "Aria" set the stage and established temporal priorities of vocal music rather than musical instrument music (it did not come into effect until 1600). "Contrapuntal Forms", "Counterpoint", "Fugue" are displayed in this order, articles about "sonata" and "sonata form" are displayed late. It is probably the most interesting thing.

In "sonata form", Tovey skipped the usual discussion about sophistication, development, and replication. Instead, he starts with the difference between the ternary and binomial forms (it recognizes the wrong choice of the term, but is getting used to it). In ternary form (ABA) there is an "A" part ending with "T" key, so it is perfect in itself. It will be a similar type prototype like Rondo format (ABACA). In binary format (AABB) there is an "A" part that ends with a key (usually a primary key) other than a supplement. Originally used in dance form, the binary format later became an ancestor of the sonata form. The essence of the sonata form is a dramatic change from the Ton key of the first theme to the key change of the second theme key. This is a rare way to discuss the format of the sonata, but it helps the reader to understand fundamental music logic.
