In Andre Dubis' short story 'The Fat Girl', the hero's Louise was born at 9 years old when her child was born. Her mother lost confidence when she was young and said she should "start seeing food" at the age of 9 (Dubus 320). Her father is the only one to accept the role of Louise in this story. "She is a growing girl" (Dubus 321) and when he limits Louise to what she can eat, he tells her mother.

"Fat Girl" is a short story about girls who try to meet today's standards and try to meet their parents. Author Andre Dubus shows how to adapt to social standards, individuals are pressured to comply with superficial images. The idea was born during the early days of Louis, through her weight change, new life, and return to her past habits. First, Andrew Dubus persuaded us as fat and led us to the life of a young girl who persuaded how hard it was to make friends. The mother told her daughter, "You must start seeing what you eat, your mother will say, I can see your metabolism." Because her mother did not want to do this, she let Louis exactly control the diet. To keep her mother unhappy, to satisfy her hunger yet, Louis started eating when no one was watching.
