Between 1630 and 1660, about 70% of the British immigrants in North America were contract employees. By 1700, Chesapeake producers shipped approximately 100,000 contracted servants, accounting for over 75% of all European immigrants in Virginia and Maryland. In 1642, the first British civil war broke out. This was mainly due to the ongoing conflict between James' son Charles I and Congress. In June 1645, the new model forces defeated the royal army in the Nasby campaign, virtually destroying the army of the king. Charles surrendered to the Scottish army of Newark. He eventually was handed over to the British Parliament at the beginning of 1647. He ran away and the second British civil war began but the new model troops soon acquired the country.
