The Effects of Incarcerating Mothers in the US

When it is a crime, the most common punishment in the United States is imprisonment. Over the past several decades, the total number of adults imprisoned jumped from 320,000 to about 4 million. In 2007, more than half of adults imprisoned in state prisons or federal prisons were parents. Most children involved in imprisonment are directly affected (Kjellstrand et al., 2012, p. 2409). Although father's imprisonment affects children, we know that the situation of mother imprisoning a child is even more serious.

Women's imprisonment has increased since the 19th century. This had various effects on these imprisoned mothers' children. When a woman is imprisoned, whatever happens to her child is a very worrying question. This article is intended to show the impact of imprisonment on women on children. This is related to their growth and happiness. (Beckerman, 1994) Given the impact of women's imprisonment on infants, it is a good idea to consider family networks. When considering the influence of female imprisonment, it is also necessary to consider the child's developmental level.

The imprisoned mother represents the rapidly growing part of the prison population. This literature review presents studies to investigate the psychological and social emotional health of children in imprisoned mothers and emphasizes the risks and protective factors at various stages of child development. Focus on the connection between children and their families and schools, and consider the outcomes of children from a development perspective.
