THE EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE ON CRIME

Simon Field discusses his work at the British Criminal Journal in his book "Influence of Temperature on Crime". The field study is focused on the locations of England and Wales. The weather variables used in his study include: rainfall, sunshine hours, and temperature. The time frame used in this method is based on quarterly police data and monthly data (Field, 1992). Like the investigation by Horrocks & Menclova, Field found a positive relationship between high temperature and property crime. As the temperature rises, people spend more time at their homes, which also increases the property crime rate such as car theft and theft (Field, 1992). The James Horrocks and Andrea Menclova branches of Canterbury University investigated the impact of the weather in New Zealand on crime. The weather variables used included temperature and precipitation and they found evidence supporting violent and property crime triggered by weather variables in this study. The methodology covered in this survey included the acquisition of violent crime data from three Canterbury Police Areas (Horrocks & Menclova). This research approach uses "panel econometric methods" to investigate the daily crime and weather data of New Zealand from 2000 to 2008 (Horrocks & Menclova). Figure 1 shows the incidence of violent crime in Finland between 1996 and 2013, and Figure 2 shows the correlation between the monthly average temperature and the number of violent crimes. As expected, there is a strong correlation between monthly violent crime rate and monthly average temperature (r = 0.51, N = 216, p = 6 × 10 -16). Corresponding correlation between monthly direct sunshine time (standardized days / month) and monthly violent crime is the correlation between ambient temperature (r = 0.24, N = 216, p = 9 × 10 -4) and monthly violence It is considerably weaker than crime.
