In John Goethe's play Faust, Gretchen's role encompasses the extreme aspects of the Virgin Mary and Eve. Mary is a symbol of a human mother and is a pure woman to save men. She has no evil at all. In contrast, Eve is a typical image of the fallen woman, cause of male pain and curse. She symbolizes death, destruction and human degradation. Eve is the opposite of Mary, and these two prototypes correspond to both sides of Gretchen's characters.
