The development of aesthetic experience and judgement

This research provides evidence of a developmental model of aesthetic judgment. It connects aesthetic experience to developmental theory and recognizes the impact of general environmental stimulation and special continuous education of art on the evolution of aesthetic understanding. Adult subjects can be divided into five levels of expertise in visual art. They judged copies of three pictures based on quality and interest, and wrote the reasons in their comments. The average stage scores of the various expert teams support the existing two development stage models of aesthetic understanding (Housen 1984, Parsons 1987). There is evidence that two variables affect the developmental level: the actual age and the amount of specific training in the field. These data show that the specific experience and training of the art has a strong overall impact on aesthetic judgment. This finding supports the theoretical distinction between universal developmental change and non-universal developmental change. In addition, the results indicate a possible field of aesthetic development theory and a possible field of sophistication. A more specific knowledge of the expert beginner's trajectory will accompany us to promote growth from the former to the latter.
