Since the Yangtze River Dam first proposed the dam in the 1920s, the Three Gorges Dam has been the subject of debate in the People's Republic of China. Construction of the world's largest Yangtze River hydropower project will damage local fauna and flora, flood rich farmlands, destroy ruins and evacuate millions of people. In the face of international and domestic criticism of the ecological and social damages caused by the Three Gorges Dam, the Chinese government remained anxious and began building this very suspicious project.
Mr. Sunko proposed the idea of originally building a dam in the Yangtze River. According to the "Development Industry Plan" of 1919, he said that it is viable to build a dam in the Yangtze River. The central government actually prepared some preliminary work such as an investigation plan. However, due to the civil war in China, the project was canceled in 1947. Chairman Mao also had the same idea as Dr. Sun. Since serious floods always occur in the upper stream of the Yangtze River, Mao is planning to start a dam project in the Yangtze River in the early 1950s. For example, in 1954, 30,000 people died along the Yangtze River and 1 million people lost their homes (Gleick, n.d). It threatens the safety of many cities along the river. However, because related technologies in China could not deal with such a large project, we had to postpone the plan.
Hydraulic power generation dams are from large to small. Once completed, the Yangtze Three Gorges Dam in China will become the world's largest power station. The dam is due to be completed in 2011 and has capacity of 22,500 megawatts. Meanwhile, the capacity of Packwood Lake Hydropower Project in Lewis County, Washington State is 27.5 megawatts.
This dam caused many concerns and problems. This is a huge scale, and other dams do not have such a large scale and impact, causing concerns about assumptions in the plan. The Three Gorges Dam blocks the Yangtze River and forms a reservoir of about 600 kilometers. Because the canyon is so narrow and steep, the reservoir will flood a lot of land. With the completion of the Three Gorges Dam project in 2009, the People's Republic of China will complete the world's largest and most expensive, and perhaps the most dangerous hydropower project. A 3 mile long, 610 feet of dam will build a reservoir up to Lake Superior. It warps 385 miles through the walls of the canyon from the location of the dam near Yichang upstream to the big city in Chongqing.
