The Cultural Landscape of Detroit, Michigan

Culture is a group of people with a common belief system, norms and values. Detroit's own culture can be regarded as popular culture mainly through information of the word of mouth and media. Cultural landscapes provide a sense of place and identity; they describe our relationship to the land that is part of the legacy of our country and all civic lives. Cultural landscapes can be referred to as important events, activities, sites related to individuals or groups.

My view comes from working in Detroit's local charter environment - this is a landscape designed with DeVos funds. I am a professional educator with 13 years' experience in the classroom. I have taught science at César Chávez Academy, a master's degree in education leadership, and I am a vice president of Michigan's Chartered teacher and staff alliance (ACTS, Michigan). .
