Evidence of the death penalty as a unique and effective measure of murder deterrence is particularly important as deterrence is the only important practical argument for death. 1 The purpose of this paper is to investigate and evaluate the evidence of deterrence. The problem must be defined correctly. We generally do not ask if the threat of punishment will stop the crime and whether it should be severely punished for murder. The problem is whether the death penalty in the form possibly being carried out in the US or in the possibility of being able to prevent homicide more than long-term imprisonment. In particular, is there any possibility that expansion of the death penalty in New Hampshire will lead to a decrease in murder?
