The relationship between therapist and client is important in effective treatment. Before any technology or theory is effective, a therapeutic relationship must be established. In psychotherapy, in addition to traditional client therapists, a dual relationship arises when the therapist has the second and significantly different relationship with the client. This may be a professional relationship, such as playing the role of a counselor or teacher. Alternatively, it may have non-professional nature, for example, a therapist is also a friend or intimate partner of a person seeking treatment. Due to possible complications in sexual situations and non-sexual situations, the existence of a dual relationship raises ethical considerations and potential legal problems.
