The Changing Role of the Us News Media

In order to draw out the prospects for the new media, I talked to Meliva Benoit, a professor of digital media and entertainment at Business School of Pepperdine Graziadio. Indeed, the media plays a variety of roles. First let's see the most obvious role of the media. We all use the media to inform us. Here, the media rewards news and information in general. This is the most important role of media in democracy. Because citizens play an important role in the political process and they have to be given information to make political choices based on information. Therefore, the media must do thorough and impartial work in communicating in general about all government activities and political events.

Relationship between media use and political participation (see function outline in Table 3). By doing so, our research has discovered the unique role of news media and online substitute media in predicting different political involvement. Traditional news media acts as a promoter of political participation, but the use of alternative media on-line leads to non-institutional political participation by increasing political dissatisfaction. Alternative media is a politically dissatisfied amplifier that encourages citizens to participate in protest actions. Both the news media and online alternative media constitute a diverse media environment where individuals are exposed to various information and play different roles for political participation (Kenix, 2011).
