Can Confucianism enrich Chinese foreign policy? The aim of this paper is to explore the main tradition of Confucian foreign policy in the history of the Chinese empire and to propose the influence that it has on contemporary Chinese foreign policy. The general concept of Confucian pacifism is not a reliable tradition of Confucian foreign policy, it is a contemporary Chinese myth that was built in the beginning of the 20th century. On the contrary, the Confucian foreign policy tradition is characterized by a contrast between subsistenceism and monopolisticism, neither abandoning the use of power as a legitimate tool for foreign policy. Both traditions are supported by traditional Chinese anthropological theory. The use of inclusiveness or foreign phobia in foreign policy is an accidental result of the interaction of relations in China's diplomatic relations. Confucian comprehensive humanism is embodied in a comprehensive tradition and can provide important ideological awareness for contemporary Chinese foreign policy.
