The Causes of Stress Among Police Officers

Law enforcement agencies are one of the most stressful and demanding professions in the United States. As the situation changes at any time, the characteristics of police work are stressful. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, approximately 12 out of 100,000 to 600,000 police officers are attacked each year.

As long as there are functioning police, you can find the police pressure. Unlike other work related pressures, the cause and effect of police stress are more clearly evident among police officials and studies have shown that they are distinct (Finn & Tomz, 1996). Law enforcement is considered one of the most stressful occupations that cause domestic violence, alcoholism, suicide, and other mental and health problems (Anderson & King, 1991). Exposure to the stress of the police may cause serious physical and mental health problems leading to reduced working efficiency, increased absence and increased turnover rates (Parsons, 2004).

Stress has something to do with the police. One thing is that stress is overwhelming and it affects health. The police need to be prepared to cope with the danger that may cause stress as well as working hours and living environment. These adversely affect health. According to the National Department of Justice, other effects of becoming a stressful police officer include irony and doubt, separation of feelings in daily life, reduced efficiency, absence and early retirement, excessive attacks, alcohol and other drugs Military problems, marriage, or other family problems, post traumatic stress disorder and suicide. () There are certain health problems such as heart attacks, ulcers, weight gain, and other health problems. ()

If there is stress, the police may even drink alcohol or commit suicide. The police suicide is increasing. According to the book, the officer commits suicide every 17 hours. 97% of officials are using their weapons to commit suicide. Alcohol in many police officers is a way to relax after a relaxing day, but for others it is a way to deal with anxiety and depression.
