The frame story contains a series of stories conveyed by a group of pilgrims traveling from the Southwark to Canterbury, where the group wants to visit St. Thomas Beckett. In order to make their pilgrims more pleasant, the pilgrims decided to talk about two episodes on their way home as each pilgrim on their way to Canterbury. Moderators will decide which is the best story. But the Canterbury story is incomplete. All 30 pilgrims speak 4 stories, and according to the original plan there should be a total of 120 stories. But Joe only finished 23 episodes.
