II. Where do we need to be in the future? For the large white community that lives in Cabot, the school district must offer students the opportunity to access diversity. School districts can not change population composition, but they can offer students the opportunity to teach diversity, tolerance, dignity and respect. Students meet students at school everyday, but diversity is limited, but the world awaiting graduation consists of people with different race, ethnicity, socio-economic background and so on.
Many students across the country face poverty, racial discrimination and oppression in local communities and schools. Educators and administrators are not sure how to meet the needs of students, especially people living in poverty. The truth is that for many reasons, too many educators simply yield to the power of poverty and racial discrimination. In the process they also gave up on the future of our children (Yes We Can, 2005). This sad submission contributes to the divergence of academic ability of our Hispanic, Native American, and Black youth. According to the result of National Education Progress Evaluation (NAEP) 2013,
• Ask the district to hold an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 section meeting. These groups ensure that school districts meet the needs of disabled students. At this meeting, explain what happened to the parents, review the plans of the children's IEP or 504 on the team and let the school take steps to stop the harassment. If your child needs counseling or other support services for harassment, parents should discuss with the team. Cooperate with schools to promote bullying of the entire system
Parents of children with learning disabilities and special needs will be asked to hold a meeting to ensure that the school district meets the needs of disabled students or to organize a separate education program (IEP) group or 504 group meeting You can request it. These teams will give them the opportunity to listen to your concerns and needs and to review your child's IEP or 504 program to ensure that the school takes steps to stop bullying and harassment . This also gives you the opportunity to mention whether your child needs counseling or other support services for bullying or harassment.
