She is the one who worked hard to separate herself from her mother in order to gain her own self and voice. Because Kingston's mother has a culture which is quite different from Kingston's own mixed Chinese and American culture, all women's past processes are becoming more difficult. Kingstone came out of that process, accepted the complexity, was satisfied with it, and was able to celebrate the pain.
