The Bribri People of Costa Rica

Costa Rica, meaning "rich coast" in Spanish, was named after the wealth of money first discovered in 1502 (Costa Rica, 1892). What the Spanish may not recognize is that the indigenous community was even more culturally rich and occupied the land for thousands of years. Until today, eight independent indigenous peoples live in Costa Rica, accounting for 1.7% of the country's population (Sévenier, 2003).
