The Berlin Crisis and the construction of the Berlin Wall

The tension between the allies and the Soviet Union reached a climax in the Berlin crisis and construction of the Berlin Wall

In the early days of the Cold War, West Berlin was a geographic loophole, thousands of East Germans fled to the democratic west side. Correspondingly, the Communist East German authorities built a wall that completely surrounds West Berlin. It was thrown overnight on August 13, 1961

In the next 30 years, as the world's nuclear power superpowers cross the wall, the city became the hottest end of the Cold War. After half a century, we gathered the wall and its influence through the BBC archive.

To prevent the tide of refugees trying to leave East Berlin, the East German Communist government began building the Berlin Wall to separate East Berlin and West Berlin. Construction of the wall caused a short-term crisis in the relationship between the United States of America and the Soviet Union, and the wall itself became a symbol of the Cold War. From the 1950's to the early 1960's, thousands of East Berlin-born people came across West Berlin and reunited with their families, escaping Communist crackdown. To prevent this outflow, the East German government started blocking all entrances from East Berlin to West Berlin by wearing a wire mesh on Sunday, August 12, 1961 and putting out a sentinel. Construction of concrete block walls surrounded by sentry tower and minefield began in the next few days and weeks. The success of the Berlin Wall completely blocked the two parts of Berlin. The construction of this wall began in 1961. The Germans made this wall an obstacle to the division of Berlin. The wall opened in 1989. Official dismantling and destruction of the Berlin Wall began in 1990. In 1992, dismantling work was completed. Along the wall there are several watchtowers. The protection tower was built along the concrete wall. The purpose of this wall is to block West Berlin from the surrounding ones including East Germany and East Berlin. According to the Eastern Group, the purpose of the wall was to protect the public from working together to establish a socialist country in East Germany to prevent the will of the building. In other words, it prevents competitors' conspiracy who wants to stop people's will. Walls are used to prevent large deviations and immigration. This is the era after the Second World War.
